A Brief History of Winnebago

Let’s start with a brief company history to give you a background of how Winnebago Industries came to be and how this company has expanded over the years.

Winnebago Industries had its humble beginnings in 1958. It was during this time when the entrepreneur John K. Hanson and his friends were able to convince Modernistic Industries, a California-based company, to set up a travel trailer factory in Forest City, Iowa.

However, this business endeavor didn’t do so well and Mr. Hanson saw this as an opportunity to buy the company. They renamed it to Winnebago Industries, after the name of the river that flowed through Forest City and Iowa County where the company was first established.

Taking inspiration from Henry Ford’s mass production process, Mr. Hanson’s company manufactured everything needed in a recreational vehicle right in their own manufacturing facility. They made RV panels and even the furniture in their factory. Because of this approach to manufacturing, Winnebago was able to offer their RVs at a more affordable price compared to their competitors.
